Professional Trade Associations. Most industries have them. These organizations are designed to protect their members. As cosmetologists in Washington, we have never really been targeted in the shocking way we saw in January 2019. In targeting us, they have awoken a sleeping giant. Cosmetologists United is here to fight for you and with you.

At the end of the 2019 WA State legislative session we were told to be ready for future attacks. We were informed that politicians would still target small business cosmetology in future sessions. Starting Cosmetologists United was our way of collectively preparing for those attacks and to get ready for the 2020 session. We want to maintain our grassroots movement, while also adding to it the legitimacy, power, and sway that comes from belonging to a trade association. As we experienced during the independent contractor bill hearings — other industries have trade organizations that use their power and influence in the political community to back their members and sway political negotiations. Fighting arm in arm as “COWU Advocates” we will be equipped to truly make a difference for the Personal Services industry! As a member advocate inside COWU we can use our grassroots activism to create an association that fuels our fight.

We represent the following trades in WASHINGTON STATE: COSMETOLOGISTS, BARBERS, HAIR DESIGNERS, NAIL TECHS, ESTHETICIANS, TATTO0 ARTISTS, PERMANENT MAKEUP, MASSAGE as well as SCHOOLS, STUDENTS & INSTRUCTORS IN THOSE FIELDS.

FAQ

Why create an association when we were triumphant last session without one?

Being an organized body gives us more clout in political discussions to negotiate compromises in favor of our interests.

What is the difference between a trade organization and a Union?

A trade association, also known as an industry trade group, business association, sector association or industry body, is an organization founded and funded by businesses that operate in a specific industry. These organizations are intended to serve the interests of their members.

VERSUS

A trade union is an assembly of workers forming a legal unit or legal personhood, usually called a “bargaining unit”, which acts as bargaining agent and legal representative for a unit of employees in all matters of law or right arising from or in the administration of a collective agreement. Aimed at protecting employees.

What happens to funds gained through selling memberships?

  1. Licensing and documentation fees for the organization
  2. Operating expenses of the organization (insurance, website, etc)
  3. Obtaining a lobbyist for legislative session
  4. Events
  5. At least 1% of every membership for an emergency fund to be gifted to our members in the event of the declaration of a state emergency like seen during the COVID-19 crisis.

What is included in a membership?

Membership perks will increase though the years, as we become a more seasoned association. What we can currently offer are:

  1. Individualized Coaching for License Renewal
  2. Legislative Updates and Action Alerts, Direction, and Assistance
  3. Sponsor Perks (Info will be provided once enrolled)
  4. Resources (Business, Cosmetology, Legislation)
