GUY LACEY : “My professional beauty career has only been 2 companies – Salon Services for 20 years and SSS for the last 8. Been a great ride. Beauty is all I’ve known. My mom raised my brother and I as a single mom hairdresser in the early 70s back when there was no business training for artists. When she married my dad in 1975 he bought a house and built a little shop in the back for her to do hair, mostly a clientele of little old ladies from the neighborhood with the tightest poodle perms on the planet. My job largely was to apply the neutralizing solution which in hindsight should have scared the heck out of her customers but I was a lot cuter then. After their hairdo we’d have tea and cookies and watch general hospital. Really good times. As I got to my teens I realized the gift mom gave wasn’t just in the hair, it was in her love – this was maybe the one time in her customer’s day when it was just about them -no family, dinners, soccer – just their time. It was sacred to mom. At GJ I got the great opportunity to study under both Gene and Michael – both taught heart but in different ways. Realizing I had no cutting talent but was good with people and numbers I dedicated myself to studying how to help hairdressers and skin therapists make a better living doing what they love. maybe if I was good, there’d be fewer kids at home wondering if there’d be dinner that night. Growing up poor was a hell of a motivator for me to help others who may be in that same situation and even today I view our customers through that lens – if I and my team do my job right, folks can eat dinner and pay bills. That has been a life honor.”
